Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti was released on bail on Wednesday, January 4 after three weeks in detention for supporting protests in Iran, her lawyer Zahra Minooei told the Isna news agency. The 38-year-old actress had been detained in Tehran since December 17 after posting several messages on social networks showing her support for the protest movement born after the death in September of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, who died after her arrest by the vice squad for violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.

Nearly 500 personalities and workers from the world of cinema, such as the French actress Marion Cotillard and the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, issued an open letter in December for the immediate release of Taraneh Alidoosti (Satellifacts, December 18).

The actress is best known for having appeared in award-winning films by director Asghar Farhadi, including The Salesman, Oscar for best foreign language film in 2017. She also starred in Saeed Roustaee's film Leila's Brothers, presented this year at the Cannes Film Festival.
