American director, screenwriter and producer Steven Spielberg will receive an Honorary Golden Bear at the 73rd Berlinale (February 16 to 26, 2023), its organizers announced on Tuesday, November 22. His latest feature, The Fabelmans, will be screened following his award ceremony, the date of which is not yet known. A tribute will also be paid to him, with a presentation of some of his more than 100 films and series, the list of which will be unveiled soon.
Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, at the head of the Berlin event, hailed an "incredible career" which has "enchanted generations of spectators around the world," while giving "a new meaning to 'cinema' as a dream factory." The director, nominated 19 times for an Oscar, has won three in his sixty-year-long career (two for Schindler's List in 1994 and one for Saving Private Ryan in 1999).
