The medical series The Resident, broadcast in France on TF1 and Warner TV, will end after six seasons, Fox announced on Friday April 7, citing declining audiences. The 6th season federated in the United States an average of 6.9 million viewers per episode on D+7, down 12% and 35% compared to seasons 5 and 1, respectively. Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi, the series takes place in Chastain Memorial Hospital and notably brings together Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal and Shaunette Renee Wilson.
However, Fox is not giving up on medical series and has ordered an adaptation (without a pilot episode) of the very popular Italian series Doc (Doc-Nelle tue mani) from Sony Pictures Television, for broadcast in 2023-2024. This production by Lux Vide (Les Médicis, Fremantle) had a huge audience on the public channel Rai Uno (8.5 million viewers and 30.8% audience share for the final episode). It had been acquired in France by TF1 which broadcast it in 2021.
Doc is inspired by the true story of an ER doctor whose life changed after the father of one of his deceased patients shot him in the head. When he woke up, he had lost the memory of the last twelve years of his life. The US version will be produced by Sony Pictures Television, which owns the adaptation rights (Satellifacts, December 15, 2020), and Fox Entertainment Studios.
