Tom Hanks was nominated three times on Monday, January 23 for the Razzies, satirical prizes which reward the worst films of the year, for his roles as manager of Elvis Presley in the biopic Elvis and Geppetto in the remake of Disney's Pinocchio. The actor, in conjunction with his "latex-laden face (and ridiculous accent)," was also named in the Razzies' "worst screen couple" category.
According to a statement from the organizers, in the film Elvis, Tom Hanks delivered the "most widely derided performance of the year 2022." While Elvis and Austin Butler have been widely acclaimed, Tom Hanks as the rock and roll star's manager has drawn the ire of critics. Disney's Pinocchio was one of the five films in the running for the Razzie for "worst film" alongside the controversial biopic of Marilyn Monroe, Blonde (nominated eight times), but also Morbius, Good Mourning (nominated seven times) and The King's Daughter.
The "Golden Raspberry Awards," the official name of the Razzies, were invented in a Los Angeles living room in 1981 by former film students and Hollywood professionals. The Razzies are usually announced the day before the Academy Awards. The lucky winners receive a trophy representing a raspberry the size of a golf ball placed on a reel of Super 8 film.
