Season 5 of The Crown was launched on Wednesday November 9 on Netflix, with a warning stating in the introduction that the story is a fiction "inspired by real events", which the platform had always refused to do. For his part, the British comedian Dominic West, interpreter of the future Charles III, called not to judge the sovereign harshly on the basis of the series, during the premiere, Tuesday, November 8, in London.

Just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the pressure was such that Netflix had to incorporate this warning. These ten new episodes focus on the 1990s, marked by the break between Prince Charles and Diana, created considerable expectation but also aroused strong criticism of the liberties taken by the series. Artistic personalities like actress Judi Dench or ex-Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair have taken up the cause, as the season depicts Charles, for example, in unproven maneuvers to obtain the abdication of his mother.

Created by Peter Morgan, this Netflix original series is produced by Sony's UK subsidiary Left Bank Pictures. This 5th season features a new cast including, in addition to Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, succeeding Olivia Colman in the role of Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip), Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret), Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana) and Olivia Williams (Camilla Parker Bowles).
